Minorities participation in Alzheimer?s Disease research Lead Investigator: Giovanna Pilonieta Institution : University of Alabama at Birmingham E-Mail : gpilonieta@uabmc.edu Proposal ID : 1180 Proposal Description: Alzheimer?s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States affecting more than 5 million Americans. Regarding its prevalence, Latinos are 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer?s and other dementias whereas African-Americans are twice more likely compared to their white counterparts. (Alzheimer?s Association,2017) Therefore, research is needed to understand risk factors which contribute to this disproportionate prevalence, however, these ethnics groups African- Americans and /Hispanics are underrepresented in research related to aging and Alzheimer disease. Recent literature identifies as the main barriers for taking part in research, mistrust of the medical establishment and medical research, fear, financial constraints and lack of knowledge about the disease and research opportunities. (Hughes, Varma, Pettigrew, Albert, 2017 Neugroschl et al., 2016) Thus, research organizations should implement culturally tailored approaches for enrollment and recruitment that consider characteristics such as family history, comorbidities, and demographics of this population in order to be effective. The purpose of this proposal is to ascertain demographic characteristics, family history and comorbidities of minorities participating in AD research in order to develop and implement culturally tailored recruitment strategies. A better understanding of these attributes would enable researchers to address challenges on recruitment and enrollment of minorities in Alzheimer Disease Research. Objectives Ascertain demographics characteristics, family history and comorbidities of minorities taking part on AD research. Evaluating these factors and understanding their role on minorities participation compared to their white counterparts would enable AD centers to design and implement culturally tailored recruitment strategies. Comparison within and between groups will be
